【Abukuma Shrine summary】
Abukuma Shrine was founded in 1989. It is a fairly new shrine, and is located in front of Abukuma-do Cave as a regent shrine of Sugaya Shrine. The shrine is built in the middle of a large bedrock (sheer rock). The three deities are Amenokoyane no Mikoto, Oyamazuminokami, and Iwasuhimenomikoto.
【Abukuma Shrine precincts】
It is located on the road from the parking lot to Abukuma Caves.
It rises above a rocky hill and is reached by a steep flight of stairs.
After climbing a long flight of stairs, we found a large rock and shrine hall enshrining Kannon Bosatsu.
From the observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Abukuma Plateau. There are various theories as to the origin of the word “Abukuma,” but it is thought to refer to the “Abukuma Mountains,” which stretch across Fukushima Prefecture in a relaxed manner, and means “to be sprawled” or “to lie comfortably” in Ainu language. There are many place names in Fukushima that are thought to be of Ainu origin, and some people seem to be studying them.

Manager’s Comments
Before entering Abukuma Caves, it is a good idea to visit Abukuma Shrine to pray for the safety of entering the cave. However, if you are with children, you may want to enter the cave as soon as possible, so I myself stopped by on my way back and prayed for traffic safety.
