Shōnai Domain School Chidokan [Yamagata]

【Shōnai Domain School Chidokan Summary】

Shonai Domain School Chidokan was established in 1805 (Bunka 2) by Lord Tadanori, the ninth head of the Sakai family, with the aim of revitalizing the samurai spirit of the Shonai domain and cultivating outstanding talent. Adopting the teachings of Sorai as its academic foundation and emphasizing an educational philosophy that valued autonomy, the school focused on nurturing each student’s strengths according to their innate talents. This approach fostered a culture of education characterized by simplicity, integrity, and resilience. The school closed in 1873 (Meiji 6). Subsequently, the site was reportedly used for various purposes, including as the Tsuruoka Prefectural Office, the Tsuruoka Police Station, and an elementary school.

At the innermost part lies the Oirino-ma. It is said this was the place the feudal lord entered when visiting, and the ceiling and floor are constructed to prevent intruders. It featured a collaboration with the Sword Men (Furubizen Nobufusa and Shinano Tōshirō).

Manager’s Comments

Located in front of Tsuruoka City Hall, it’s free to visit. I found it quite valuable that the original building survived wartime destruction and natural disasters, and the facility houses a substantial collection of historical materials. It was also fascinating to see exhibits on Confucius, the history of the Shonai Domain, and a world map from the Edo period. If you’re interested in history and happen to be in the area, I highly recommend visiting. However, while it can get hot inside during summer, the building has excellent ventilation, allowing you to appreciate the remarkable craftsmanship of traditional Japanese wooden architecture.
