【Kamo Aquarium Summary】
Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium is the only aquarium in Yamagata Prefecture. Located in Tsuruoka City facing the Sea of Japan, it is affectionately known as the Jellyfish Dream Pavilion. It boasts the world’s largest jellyfish exhibit and holds the Guinness World Record for the most jellyfish species displayed.

Originally established as the Yamagata Prefectural Aquarium, it faced repeated crises during the war, including closure and financial failure, yet managed to survive. When attendance plummeted to zero on some days, a serendipitous mass bloom of jellyfish in the coral tank led to the development of jellyfish-focused exhibits and merchandise, paving the way for its current form. Admission fees are ¥1,500 for adults, ¥500 for elementary and junior high school students, and free for preschoolers.

In aquariums of various sizes, over 50 species of jellyfish drifted, and the dim lighting inside the facility created a pleasant atmosphere.

The exhibit features a jellyfish growth observation area, behind-the-scenes tours revealing the secrets of jellyfish care, and staff-led “Jellyfish Talks,” offering not only displays but also rich learning and hands-on experiences.

【Kamo Aquarium Jellyfish Dream Theater】
The massive 5-meter-diameter tank, “Jellyfish Dream Theater,” was truly spectacular. The sight of ten thousand jellyfish drifting in the light was like an art installation, possessing a profoundly mystical beauty.

Watching the jellyfish sway gently back and forth while sitting in my chair was soothing.

Manager’s Comments
While the location is a bit challenging, it’s an aquarium where families with children can relax and enjoy themselves. The facility itself isn’t large, but it boasts the world’s largest variety of jellyfish exhibits, making it one of the must-visit spots when traveling in Yamagata Prefecture. Even on weekdays, it was quite crowded, so I recommend purchasing tickets online or arriving early.
※Please note that the facility will be closed for renovation from November 2025 to March 2026.
