Namikiri Fudōin Temple [Chiba]

【Namikiri Fudōin Temple Summary】

Namikiri Fudōin Temple is said to have been founded when Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai) relocated a statue of Fudō Myōō, originally carved by Gyōki in 736 (the 8th year of the Tenpyō era) to protect shipwreck victims, to Mount Ishizuka and performed the eye-opening ceremony to save the people. Affectionately known since ancient times as Namikiri Fudo, this Shingon Chisan sect temple’s formal name is Narutōzan Fudōin Chōshōji. It is the 32nd temple of the New Kazusa Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage.

Vajra railings flank the front sides of the first story, housing painted Nio guardian statues. Viewed from the front, they are quite imposing.

The main hall stands atop rocks midway up Mount Ishizuka (Ishizuka Forest) at an elevation of 30 meters. It features an irimoya-style tiled roof, measures three ken in width and four ken in depth, and is constructed as a cliff-side structure (lacquered vermilion) surrounded by a balustrade and corridor. It is supported by 26 pillars, including two through pillars extending from the stone-piled foundation all the way to the inner sanctuary of the main hall.

There are no clear records regarding the founding date of the main hall, but it is said that a roof beam plaque discovered during renovations was inscribed with the year Genna 4 (1618). The current main hall is believed to date back at least to the early Edo period, and it appears to have undergone several renovations since then.

The main hall enshrines Fudō Myōō and the two child attendants Kongara and Seitaka. Since ancient times, it has been known as Nagaregiri Fudō-in and is said to have contributed to preventing maritime disasters. Although the coastline has receded, making it invisible from the sea today, legends remain of ships in distress being saved by the light of its eternal night lamp.

Manager’s Comments

The temple on the hilltop didn’t seem particularly high when viewed from below, but climbing up, I was surprised by how tall it felt. With no tall buildings nearby, the view is excellent. If you’re in the area, why not stop by?
