Shoin Shrine [Tokyo]

【Overview of Shoin Shrine】

Shoin Shrine was founded in 1907 by the disciples of Yoshida Shoin, such as Ito Hirobumi and Nomura Yasushi, dedicating him as the enshrined deity. Its predecessor was a private shrine built by his birth family (the Sugi family) in 1890. Situated next to a replica of his private school, Shoka Sonjuku, the shrine is widely known as a place to pray to the god of learning.

【Who is Yoshida Shoin?】

Yoshida Shoin was a thinker and activist born in the Choshu Domain (present-day Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) during the Bakumatsu period (the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate). After traveling and studying across Japan, he felt a profound sense of crisis regarding Japan’s delayed development due to its national isolation policy. Wanting to learn for the sake of his country, he attempted to smuggle himself overseas to study, but failed and was imprisoned.

Though later forced into house arrest in his hometown, he opened a private school at his residence, teaching local youths how to live righteously as human beings. He is famous for educating key figures who would later drive the Meiji Restoration, including Takasugi Shinsaku, Ito Hirobumi, and Kusaka Genzui.

Later, he strongly objected to the Shogunate signing the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the United States without the Emperor’s permission. Fully prepared to die, he planned the assassination of a Roju (the highest-ranking government official of the Edo Shogunate). He was captured as a dangerous radical and beheaded in Edo. He passed away at the young age of 29.

This torii gate was dedicated by Kido Takayoshi, one of the “Three Great Nobles of the Restoration,” when the gravesite of Yoshida Shoin was being repaired. Kido Takayoshi is also widely known as a master swordsman who made a name for himself under the alias “Katsura Kogoro” during the Bakumatsu period.

This statue was cast and placed in its current location as a commemorative project for the 130th anniversary of Yoshida Shoin’s enshrinement here. It is said that Shoin’s relatives saw the plaster cast and gave their approval, making this perhaps the closest resemblance to his actual appearance when he was alive.

After he was executed in the Ansei Purge in 1859, his remains were initially buried at Eko-in Temple in Senju. However, in 1863, his disciples, including Takasugi Shinsaku, reburied him at this current location.

Later, during the Shogunate’s expedition against Choshu following the Kinmon Incident, the grave was destroyed by the Shogunate. It was eventually repaired in 1868 (the first year of the Meiji era) by Kido Takayoshi (Katsura Kogoro) and others.

A replica of Shoka Sonjuku (his private school) is exhibited at this shrine. The original building still stands on the grounds of Shoin Shrine in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is one of the component sites of the World Cultural Heritage “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.”

He accepted ambitious young people regardless of their social status, producing many great historical figures like Takasugi Shinsaku and Ito Hirobumi who accomplished the Meiji Restoration. I would definitely love to see the original one in Yamaguchi Prefecture someday.

Admin’s Impressions

Thinking back to that era—before the fall of the Edo Shogunate—it was a tragic time when criticizing the central government was equated to criticizing the state, much like in certain modern dictatorial nations, and execution was the norm. Even so, he was a man of high aspirations who tried to correct the country’s path, fully prepared to die for it.

Interestingly, the nearby Gotoku-ji Temple is the family temple of Ii Naosuke, the very man who ordered Shoin’s execution. This proximity really makes you feel the flow and irony of history. In modern Japan, many people are losing interest in history, but I believe we must never forget that the normal, free lives we enjoy today are built upon such sacrifices. I don’t know if mourning him by worshipping him as a god is the right approach, but to Shoin-san, I simply say: please rest in peace.
