Shibamata Station: The Journey Begins at the Plaza of “Reunion”

3.Taishakuten Approach (Sando): Lured by Savory Aromas

The approximately 200-meter approach leading from the station to Taishakuten is one of the highlights of Shibamata sightseeing.

It is lined with shops selling the famous kusa-dango (mugwort dumplings), freshly roasted senbei (rice crackers) wafting a savory soy sauce aroma, and long-established river fish restaurants. Enjoy snacking as you walk through the atmospheric streets of wooden architecture.

4.Shibamata Taishakuten (Daikyoji Temple): Masterful Carvings and a Tranquil Garden

The massive wood carvings depicting tales from the Lotus Sutra at the back of the main hall are, in a word, a masterpiece. You will completely forget the hustle and bustle of the big city.

5.Yamamoto-tei: A Beautiful Residence Blending Japanese and Western Styles

Heading behind Taishakuten, you will find Yamamoto-tei, the former residence of Einosuke Yamamoto, the founder of a camera parts manufacturing company. This space beautifully fuses Japanese and Western architecture with a garden that consistently ranks high in Japanese garden rankings. You can also enjoy a cafe experience here; sipping matcha green tea while looking out at the beautiful greenery is truly exceptional.

6.Katsushika Shibamata Tora-san Museum: Immersed in a World of Human Kindness

7.Shibamata Hachiman Shrine: An Ancient Guardian Deity Watching Over the Community

Stretch your legs a bit further to visit the local guardian deity. Surprisingly, this historic shrine is built on top of an ancient burial mound (kofun). Away from the noise of the tourist spots, it is a place where you can quietly reflect—a spot for true connoisseurs.

8.Showa Retro Cafe Sepia: Ending the Walk in a Candy-Colored Space

The final stop on the journey is “Cafe Sepia,” a place with an incredibly strong personality. The interior is overflowing with Showa-era shojo (girls’) manga and retro goods, making you feel as if you are inside a time capsule.
