Tama Shrine [Chiba]

【Tama Shrine Summary】

The founding of Tamajinja Shrine is subject to various theories. According to tradition, one theory holds that it began in 935 (the fifth year of the Jōhei era) during the Heian period, when Taira no Yoshikane established the Rokuten-gū Shrine in Tama. Another theory states that it originated in 1509 (the sixth year of the Eishō era) during the Sengoku period, when Sakai Sadataka built Tama Castle and established the Rokuten-gū Shrine within the castle grounds.

After that, in 1576 (the fourth year of the Tenshō era), it was relocated to its present site and has since been revered as the guardian shrine for the Tamano and Togane regions. Locally known as “Dairoku-ten-san,” it enshrines the Three Creators of the Universe: Amenominakanushi-no-kami, Takamimusubi-no-kami, and Kamimusubi-no-kami as its principal deities.

【Three Creation Gods (Zōka Sānshin) ?】

The Three Creation Gods (Zōka Sānshin) are the first three deities to appear in the world, introduced at the beginning of the Kojiki. They are the gods who form the origin of the universe and all things, regarded as solitary deities without gender.

Immediately after the torii gate, there are stairs. Despite being beside a road with relatively heavy traffic, it was a quiet place.

The floral water at this hand-washing basin seems to be changed regularly. You can really feel the dedication of the shrine priests. Nearby Sannō Shrine featured monkeys, while this Tamano Shrine had frogs.

The interior is open for viewing, allowing the sacred mirror to appear remarkably close. Perhaps because it enshrines the Three Creators of the Universe, there are three bells.

【Tamanajo Castle Ruins】

Behind the castle lies a steep mountain path leading to the Tamanajo Castle Ruins. The ruins do not appear to be developed as a tourist site, and due to the steep incline and dangerous conditions, it is advisable not to attempt the climb unless absolutely necessary.

Manager’s Comments

The shrine isn’t large, but you can feel its history. The grounds felt compact yet exuded a welcoming atmosphere, meticulously maintained and beautiful. It’s a mysterious shrine that makes you want to visit again. Since it’s relatively close to Togane Hiyoshi Shrine, I recommend visiting both together.
