【Overview of Tora-san Museum】
At the Tora-san Museum, the townscape of Shibamata—the beloved hometown of the main character Torajiro Kuruma (Tora-san)—is beautifully recreated using actual sets from the film shoots and elaborate dioramas. It is a precious spot not only for movie fans but also for younger generations who have never seen the films and international travelers, allowing them to experience firsthand the warmth of Showa-era Japan and the culture of the shitamachi (traditional working-class neighborhoods). I highly recommend the combined ticket for the Tora-san Museum and Yamamoto-tei for 550 yen.

The first thing that will surprise you upon entering the museum is the set of “Kurumaya,” the sweet dumpling (dango) shop that serves as Tora-san’s family home. This was relocated exactly as it was from the Ofuna Shochiku Studio where it was actually filmed. The well-worn pillars, the kitchen brimming with the feel of Showa-era daily life, and the living room where Tora-san always sits…

Stepping inside makes you feel as though you’ve wandered right into the movie screen. It is an exhibit that could be called a living historical document, perfect for learning about the real lifestyles of Japan during the 1950s and 60s (Showa 30s-40s).

Another highlight of the museum is the massive diorama recreating the former townscape of Shibamata. The approach to Taishakuten, the traditional houses, and the lives of the people who live there are crafted down to the finest detail.

Looking at the scenes of “close-knit neighborly interactions” and “bustling shopping streets”—things that have become hard to find in modern Tokyo—evokes a certain sense of nostalgia.
【Overview of Yamamoto-tei】
The exact year Yamamoto-tei was built is unknown, but it is believed to have been constructed in the 1920s. It is currently owned by Katsushika City and is open to the public. It is also designated as a Historic Building Selected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

It is located next to the Tora-san Museum.

It is a modern Japanese-style building, symbolized by features like the glass windows along the veranda (engawa). The interior boasts a blend of Japanese and Western styles, such as the Western-style drawing room equipped with a glass pendant light and a marble mantelpiece.

Although the garden is not particularly large, it is designed in a way that creates a sense of depth. Light refreshments are served in this traditional Japanese living environment where the house and garden seamlessly blend together. It’s a great place to take a break after visiting the Tora-san Museum or Shibamata Taishakuten.

Admin’s Impressions
I personally have never watched Otoko wa Tsurai yo, but the streets of Shibamata had a somewhat nostalgic atmosphere, and the route of visiting Taishakuten followed by strolling through Yamamoto-tei and the Tora-san Museum was very fulfilling. I highly recommend buying the combined admission ticket for Yamamoto-tei and the Tora-san Museum to explore both. I believe even generations unfamiliar with the movies can fully enjoy the experience.
