The Arimura Lava Observation Deck is an observation deck located on a small hill on the lava field that spilled out in the great explosion of 1946. 【Sakurajima?】

Sakurajima is said to be the symbol of Kagoshima. It is a volcanic complex consisting of two main peaks, Kitadake and Minamidake, with a height of 1,117ⅿ (Kitadake and Mitake), an area of about 80 km², and a circumference of about 52 km.

Sakurajima was born about 26,000 years ago and has repeatedly erupted 17 times. It used to be an “island” as its name suggests, but the straits were reclaimed by lava that flowed during the Taisho eruption of 1914, and it became part of the Osumi Peninsula. Today, small eruptions continue to occur on a daily basis, and the number of explosive eruptions in 2011 was 996, the most in recorded history.

Manager’s Comments

The Arimura Lava Observatory is a moderately spacious place with various shapes of lava, and it was interesting just to look around. There are several observatories where one can observe Sakurajima, but this observatory is well maintained and touristy, and the parking lot is spacious and easy to park in. The fact that both parking and fees are free makes it a great sightseeing spot.
