Attack on Titan Oyama Dam Bronze Statues [Oita]

【Overview of Attack on Titan Oyama Dam Bronze Statues】

The Attack on Titan Oyama Dam Bronze Statues are a spot located in Hita City, Oita Prefecture—the hometown of Hajime Isayama, author of the popular manga Attack on Titan—that recreates the very beginning of the story.

Hajime Isayama himself is said to have drawn inspiration for the story from the landscape surrounded by “tall walls (the dam).” Planned by a local volunteer group called the “Attack on Hita Town Revitalization Council,” approximately 30 million yen in donations—far exceeding the original goal—was gathered from fans across the country, leading to the unveiling ceremony in November 2020.

【What is Attack on Titan?】

The total global circulation of the Attack on Titan series exceeds 140 million copies. This is a mega-hit record that ranks among the top in Japanese manga history (around 10th place overall).

The story is a dark fantasy about humans living in a world surrounded by walls, fighting against mysterious Titans. As the story progresses, it develops dramatically into the true identity of the Titans, the reality of the outside world, and conflicts between humans.

【Overview of Oyama Dam】

Oyama Dam is a concrete gravity dam built on the Akaishi River, part of the Chikugo River system, operated by the Japan Water Agency for the purposes of flood control and securing water supply.

While it is currently famous as a sacred spot (seichi) for Attack on Titan, the dam itself holds many charms, including its role as vital infrastructure for Kyushu and its surrounding rich natural environment.

Treating the 94-meter-high wall of the Oyama Dam as “Wall Maria” from the series, the famous scene where the young Eren, Mikasa, and Armin encounter a Titan for the first time and look up at the wall is depicted with life-sized bronze statues.

Admin’s Impressions

A colossal dam suddenly appearing amid the rich natural scenery of Hita. Standing at its base, the small backs of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin make the overwhelming scale of the wall stand out even more. It is not just a simple tourist attraction; I was deeply convinced that the terrain and sense of scale of this land served as the very roots of the work. Although there are only the dam and the statues here, I think it is a place that fans will thoroughly enjoy.
