This Japanese garden was designed by the Kyoto landscape architect, the seventh-generation Ogawa Jihei. It is a strolling pond garden, centered around a pond shaped like the kanji character for “heart” (心), with surrounding woodlands, a waterfall, and snow-viewing lanterns.

As noted at Hiratsuka Shrine, during the late Heian period (794–1185), the Toshima clan who ruled the Kantō region built a castle here, and the former Koga residence is believed to have been within the grounds of “Hiratsuka Castle.” A battle occurred in 1477 (Bunmei 9), with fighting taking place around the present-day garden area.

Manager’s Comments

You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of a Western-style mansion, Western-style garden, and Japanese garden all integrated together. This time, I was able to see the autumn roses and the autumn leaves in the Japanese garden. Both the roses that complemented the Western-style mansion and the garden, which looked beautiful from every angle, were wonderful. For just 150 yen, it’s a satisfying spot with many highlights. Since many tour groups visit, early morning is recommended. It might be interesting to explore it alongside Hiratsuka Shrine, imagining the old Hiratsuka Castle.
