【Mabashi Inari Shrine summary】
Mabashi Inari Shrine was founded at the end of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). In 1831, when the shrine was rebuilt, 53 clansmen contributed money to the shrine, which was presented to the Shirakawa Shinto Shrine in Kyoto, and the following year the shrine received the divine title of “Shoichi Ashiho Inari Dai Myojin” (Great God of Inari). In 1907, the Ontake Shrine, Hakusan Shrine, Tenjin Shrine, and Suijin Shrine in the village were enshrined together. The present name of the shrine is said to be derived from the fact that the residents regretted the loss of the name of Mabashi when the shrine was enshrined together, and left it as the name of the shrine.
The deities enshrined at the shrine are Ukanomitama no Kami and Omatonozu no Kami.
The Ichino-torii (first torii) is an 8-meter-high vermilion-lacquered torii made of 400-year-old cypress leaf timbers.

There are only three torii gates in Tokyo with dragons carved into the pillars, and they are also known as the three major dragon torii gates in Tokyo. They are located at Shinagawa Shrine, Koenji Temple, and Mabashi Inari Shrine.

On both sides of the path are streams that remind us of the river that used to flow nearby, and if you look closely, you can see killifish and goldfish swimming in them. The moss-covered waterway along the approach and the sound of the stream create a very comfortable space.

The hand-watering basin is said to be made of huge natural stone, which is rare to find anywhere else. This is also wonderful.

As you proceed along the approach to the shrine, you will see the splendid Zuijinmon Gate, which is also beautiful with its vermilion gate. Zuijinmon is a gate of a shrine with guardian deity statues called Zuijin enshrined on both sides. It serves as the Niomon gate of a temple and is meant to keep evil spirits from entering the shrine.

The central ceiling of the gate is decorated with a 75-centimeter-diameter kaiun bell, said to be the largest in Tokyo. It is said that if you clap your hands under the bell while thinking of your wish and it resonates, your wish will come true.

Wish-fulfilling foxes can be purchased at the shrine office. It seems that you can put a piece of paper with your wish written inside the fox and have it delivered to God.

Manager’s Comments
I think this shrine was and still is loved and cherished by the community. The approach to the shrine is especially beautiful and quiet, and the atmosphere is quite pleasing to me. There are several entrances to the shrine, but I recommend that you visit from the main approach. I envy those who have such a shrine in their neighborhood. I would like to visit the shrine again.
