【Mogusa Hachiman Shrine Summary】
The founding date of Mogusa Hachiman Shrine is unknown, but based on the inscription on its treasured stone komainu guardian dogs dating from 729 to 749, it is believed to have been established during the Nara period. In 1062 (Kōhei 5), Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, during his campaign to subjugate the northern provinces, is said to have buried sacred soil from Mount Ono Hachimangū (present-day Iwashimizu Hachimangū) in Yamashiro Province here, rebuilt the shrine, and prayed for victory in battle.
The enshrined deity is Hachiman-sama, so we worship Emperor Ōjin (Hondawake no Mikoto).

Although it appears to have undergone numerous renovations over the years, the current shrine building seems to have been reconstructed in 1970 (Showa 45).

The contrast between the forest’s green and vermilion is lovely.

It’s nice that it’s quiet and peaceful with no crowds.

Behind this, a magnificent grove of chestnut trees, each 300 to 400 years old, stood powerfully, drawing my gaze.

I felt truly sorry for having considered Mogusaen merely as a minor side attraction. The air and atmosphere at this shrine were exceptionally pleasant, leaving me feeling purified. It was a joy to encounter a shrine that truly resonated with me after so long. You should definitely visit on your way back from Mogusaen. It’s located between Ono Shrine and Kōbō-ji Temple on Mount Takahata, so visiting both as part of a walking tour would make for a fulfilling experience. Note that it’s a subsidiary shrine of Ono Shrine, and you can get the goshuin stamp at Ono Shrine. Unfortunately, I only learned this after my visit, so next time.
