【Sunosaki Shrine summary】
Sunosaki Shrine was built in 807 (Daido 2). During the reign of Emperor Jinmu, Ametomi-no-mikoto enshrined a mirror that had belonged to his grandmother, Amebirino-no-mikoto, as a sacred object on Mount Mitarasu (Mt. Mitarasu) when he settled Boso.
The deity of the shrine is Ama-no-Hirino-Me-no-Mikoto.
The shrine has many traditions related to Yaku Kozuno, the founder of Shugendo, suggesting that Suzaki Shrine has long been strongly influenced by the idea of Shintoism and Buddhism and Shugendo.
It is also said that Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed for victory when he fled to Awa after his defeat in the Battle of Ishibashiyama. It is believed that he did this to gain the support of Suzaki Shrine, which once had a great influence on marine traffic in Edo Bay and was one of the centers of Shugendo in the eastern part of Japan.
A branch of the Suzaki Shrine is the Shinagawa Shrine in Tokyo, which was recommended by Minamoto no Yoritomo from the Suzaki Shrine for maritime safety.

Zuijimon Gate was built around 1704-1711. Since there is no resident priest at this shrine, there is a GOSHUIN with a note on the left side of the gate, which costs 500 yen.

Manager’s Comments
Because the surrounding area is left as a natural forest, the view, nature, and atmosphere are all sacred and wonderful. There are many places of interest, and the ability to worship while feeling the sea breeze is also an attraction. It may be because the access to the shrine is not good or bad that there are few worshippers, but it is an attraction. The road leading to the beach is paved, so it looks like you can drive to the Hamatorii, but there is no place to park and no vehicles are allowed, so please park in the parking lot of the shrine.
