【Takachiho Shrine summary】
Takachiho Shrine is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Suinin. The period of Emperor Suinin’s reign is dated from 29 B.C. to 70 A.D. according to the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), which translates to 29 B.C. to 70 A.D. (The period of Emperor Suinin’s reign is not necessarily consistent with archaeological evidence. (There are several theories about the shrine’s construction, including that it was built to worship Emperor Niniginomikoto, or that it was built by Emperor Jinmu’s elder brother, Miko-irinomikoto, to pray for the protection of the nation after he defeated the demons of the Eight Demons. There is also a theory that the shrine was built to protect the nation after Emperor Jinmu’s elder brother, Miko-irino no Mikoto, defeated the eight demons. It is also the general shrine of the 88 shrines of Takachiho.
The deities enshrined at the shrine are Takachiho no Mikami and Jyusha Daimyojin.

Manager’s Comments
The shrine has been the setting of myths and legends and has a solemn history. The magnificent cedar trees and mystical atmosphere were wonderful. I also thought that the shrine maidens and staff were very helpful and set a good example for others to follow. I would like to visit again with my family to see Takachiho Kagura.
