【Shiratori Shrine summary】
Shiratori Shrine was founded around 946-967. In the 3rd year of Tentoku (959), while visiting Mount Kirishima, Shonin Shonin was reciting the Lotus Sutra at the Rokkannon Hall by the Rokkannon Pond near the top of Mount Shiratori. At that time, a white-haired old man appeared and said, “I am Nihon Buson, a swan who lives on this mountain, and I want you to build a shrine to worship me,” and flew away.
The deity is Yamatotakeru, the 12th Emperor Keiko’s son.
【Shiratori Shrine road approaching a shrine】
210 stone steps from Ichino-torii (first torii gate). (Those who are not confident with their legs and backs can drive up the steps.)
The stairs are steep and strenuous, but the serene atmosphere is wonderful. The air was clean and it felt good just to take a deep breath.
【Shiratori Shrine Red pine used for Todaiji Temple】
Two red pine trees, said to be 2,000 years old, from Shiratori Shrine were used for the roof of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple. At that time, the pine trees were transported to Nara by the combined efforts of several hundred people and 40 oxen. The red pine trees continue to support the Great Buddha Hall to this day.

Manager’s Comments
On the way to Kirishima, a torii gate caught my eye and I was drawn to pay my respects. In such an unpopular place deep in the mountains, there was a magnificent shrine with a long history. There was an indescribable mystical atmosphere, and I was glad to be able to visit the shrine.
