Suga Shrine [Tokyo]

【Summary】

Sugajinja (Suga Shrine) became famous as one of the sacred places (featured in the last scene) of the animated film “Kimi no na wa” (Your Name). It has been located in Yotsuya since the beginning of the Edo period and is the town deity of Yotsuya Juhachikacho. It is said that Suga Shrine began in 1634 when the Inari Shrine in Shimizudani, Akasaka Ikkimura, was moved to Yotsuya for the construction of the outer moat of Edo Castle.

The main deities are Susano-o-no-mikoto and Ukano-no-mitama-no-mikoto. The shrine has been the head shrine of Yotsuya since the early Edo period, and is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Shinjuku Ward, with offerings such as the Sanjuroku-Uchusen picture scroll.

The view of the city from Otoko Hill near the entrance of Suga Shrine Park is a famous filming spot for the final scene of “Kimi no na wa.

There were many people taking pictures and videos on the stairs. I thought it was empty, but surprisingly there were many foreigners. However, there were few visitors to the Suga Shrine, and there were foreigners smoking on the stairs waiting for photos, so please mind your manners.
