Terukuni Shrine [Kagoshima]

【Terukuni Shrine summary】

Terukuni Shrine was built in 1864. In 1863, the Emperor bestowed the divine title of “Terukuni-daimyojin” on Shimazu Nariakira, and in 1864, the following year, the shrine was built on the site of Nansen-in Temple and renamed Terukuni Shrine.

The shrine is dedicated to Nariakira Shimadzu, the 28th head of the Shimadzu family and the 11th lord of the Satsuma clan.

【Shimazu Nariakira?】

Lord Nariakira Shimazu was a man active at the end of the Edo period who devoted himself to the modernization of Japan, including research on cameras, telegraph, and gas, and is one of Kagoshima’s representative great men. In the Edo period, marriages between shoguns and feudal lords were difficult because of the difference in rank between the two families. Despite various difficulties, Lord Nariakira Shimazu managed to arrange the marriage between the Tokugawa family and Princess Atsu (adopted daughter of the main Shimazu family), and so he is enshrined as the god of marriage. He is also famous as the man who promoted Saigo Takamori, who was a low-ranking samurai at the time, to a position of prominence.
