Kagoshima Jingu Shrine [Kagoshima]

【Kagoshima Jingu Shrine summary】

The founding of Kagoshima Jingu (Kagoshima Shrine) is unknown. According to one theory, the shrine was originally Takachiho Palace, which was the palace of Amatsuhitaka Hiko Hohodemi no Mikoto during the reign of Emperor Jinmu, and was moved to its current location in 708. Although Kirishima Jingu Shrine is better known, this is the most prestigious shrine in Kagoshima, bearing the name of Kagoshima. The shrine was once called “Osumi Sho Hachiman-gu Shrine” due to the fact that four Hachiman deities (Hachiman deities) were recommended from Ishimizu Hachiman-gu Shrine as Hachiman Gosho Bekkoku.

The five shrines are located in Kyushu, the birthplace of Hachiman shrines, following Usa Hachiman Shrine and Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine. Since the Kamakura period (1185-1333), they have also been referred to as Gosho Bekumiya, the same name as Ishimizu Hachiman-gu Shrine. The Gosho Bekumangu are Kagoshima Jingu (Oosumi Sho Hachimangu), Oita Hachimangu, Senguri Hachimangu, Nitta Shrine, and Fujisaki Hachimangu.

Originally located on the site of the nearby Ishimata Shrine, it was burned in a dispute with Usa Jingu Shrine over which of the two was the legitimate Hachiman. There is a legend that the people who burned the shrine fell one after another due to divine punishment.

The deities enshrined at the shrine are Hikohohodemi no Mikoto and Toyotama Hime no Mikoto.

【Hikohohodemi no Mikoto(Prince Fire-Fade)?】

He is the son of Ninigi no Mikoto, a god in Japanese mythology and enshrined at Kirishima Shrine. He is the grandfather of Emperor Jinmu (the first emperor). He is said to be the model for the legend of Urashima Taro in Japanese folk tales.

The construction of this shrine pavilion is unique, with the main hall and worship hall on the side, and you reach the front of the worship hall. It was strange that the approach to the shrine is not in front of it, although it has its back to the north.

Manager’s Comments

The shrine has some nationally important cultural properties and is well worth seeing. The number of worshippers was relatively small, but it seemed that local people were always worshipping at the shrine, indicating that the shrine is well respected. Not only the worship hall and the main shrine, but also the shrine grounds themselves had a wonderful, quiet, and serene atmosphere.
