【Tokyo Stock Exchange Summary】
The Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) is Japan’s largest stock exchange, headquartered in Kabutocho, Nihonbashi, Chuo Ward, Tokyo. Construction began in 1982 and was completed in 1988. The imposing stone walls reportedly use the highest grade Inada stone (granite quarried in the Inada district of Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture). Free tours are available. Guided tours can also be booked.
Entrance is not through the main entrance, but through the West Entrance tour reception entrance on the opposite side. Several security guards are stationed there, and bag checks will be conducted upon entry.
【Tokyo Stock Exchange Market Center】

The Market Center is where the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Market Division conducts trading supervision. Until April 1999, when trading became digital, it was a physical trading floor where approximately 2,000 stockbrokers executed stock trades. The reason for its glass walls is said to symbolize market transparency and fairness.

The massive electronic display board “Ticker” spins round and round atop a giant glass cylinder measuring 17 meters in diameter and 10 meters in height. As trading volume increases, its rotation speed accelerates through four distinct stages. Red being an auspicious color, red numbers indicate positive values (stock prices rising compared to the previous day), not losses (“akaji”). Negative values (stock prices falling compared to the previous day) are displayed in green.
【Tokyo Stock Exchange Listing Bell】
The bell is struck five times during the listing ceremony on the first day of trading for companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The number five originates from the concept of “five grains of abundance,” symbolizing wishes for corporate prosperity. It is also struck on the first trading day of the new year (Gohatsu-e) and the last trading day of the year (O-nō-e).
【Tokyo Stock Exchange Toushi-kun】
The mascot character for the “Securities Knowledge Promotion Project” is a boy born on October 4th in Nihonbashi Kabutocho.

Manager’s Comments
I never imagined the heart of Japan’s economy would be so quiet. People seem to gather here only for major events like the New Year’s opening ceremony, the year-end closing ceremony, and celebrations for new listings—a dream for entrepreneurs—leaving it feeling somewhat deserted. Seeing the core of the stock exchange with my own eyes was a truly valuable experience. I recommend visiting nearby Kabuto Shrine and Nihonbashi Hie Shrine while you’re in the area.
