【Overview of Atago Shrine (Kasama)】
Atago Shrine is situated atop Mt. Atago (elevation 306m) in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Founded in 806 (Daido 1), it traces its origins to the high priest Tokuitsu Hosho, who opened the mountain as a sacred site of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism.
The shrine enshrines five primary deities, with Hinokagutsuchi no Mikoto as the main deity, alongside Izanami no Okami, Homusubi no Mikoto, Mizuhanome no Mikoto, and Haniyamehime no Mikoto. As one of Japan’s three major shrines for fire protection, these five deities symbolize the harmony of natural elements: fire, water, and earth.
【Atago Shrine (Kasama): The Second Torii Gate】
While the first torii gate stands at the foot of the mountain with a hiking trail leading up, you can drive to the second torii gate near the mountaintop parking lot.

Near the entrance to the path, a Dosojin (guardian deity of travelers) is enshrined.
【Atago Shrine (Kasama): The Approach (Sando)】
From the second torii, the path is a serene space surrounded by ancient, towering trees.

You can feel the air change and grow crisper as you climb. The shrine is reached in about a 10-minute walk.
【Atago Shrine (Kasama): Komainu】

The Komainu (guardian lion-dogs) were adorned with shimenawa (sacred ropes), sending a powerful message to visitors that the area beyond is a sacred sanctuary.
【Atago Shrine (Kasama): Shrine Hall】

The current hall is said to have been reconstructed in the 1750s (Horeki era) during the mid-Edo period. Built in the Irimoya style, it features a large Chidori-hafu (gable) and an intricate porch (kohai).

The carvings of dragons and lions on the pillars and beams are exceptionally detailed. By special courtesy, I was able to view the interior, which housed historical paintings and Tengu ornaments.
【Atago Shrine (Kasama): Tengu】

Tengu statues are placed throughout the precinct, particularly in front of the worship hall. Legend says that “Thirteen Tengu” once lived on Mt. Atago, and they are now enshrined as guardians of the shrine.
【Atago Shrine (Kasama): Izuna Shrine (Inner Sanctuary)】

Located further behind the main hall, at the very top of a set of stone steps, is Izuna Shrine. While its exact founding date is unknown, it was already recorded in Edo-period documents. Historically known as “Izuna Gongen,” it was a site where Shugendo monks practiced rigorous mountain asceticism.

It enshrines Tajikarao no Mikoto, the “God of Strength” famous for his unparalleled power in the legend of the Heavenly Rock Cave.
【Ihari Shrine: An Ancient “Shikinaisha” within the Inner Sanctuary】
Behind Izuna Shrine sits a small, hexagonal building (Rokkakuden) which enshrines Ihari Shrine, an ancient Shikinaisha (a shrine listed in 10th-century government records).

Admin’s Impressions
At the 306m summit lies not only the history of Tokuitsu Hosho from 1,200 years ago but also the much older roots of Ihari Shrine. The coexistence of old and new deities, cherished across generations, is the greatest charm of this place. Located behind the Izuna Shrine hall, it was a bit hard to find, but it felt like a truly sacred space. Since this area has a strong character as a “place of ascetic training” rather than a mere tourist spot, visitors should remain quiet and respectful. It is clearly a shrine still deeply loved today, as many people were hiking up from the first torii.
