【Asagaya Shinmyougu Shrine summary】

Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine is said to have been built around 1190, when a local native, Hyobu Yokoi (Hyobu Yokogawa), visited the Ise Shrine in 1190, received a divine revelation, brought back a stone from the Miyagawa River (a river flowing through present-day Mie Prefecture), and enshrined it in the Shinmei-gu Shrine. It is also said that in the Yamato Period, a long time ago, the deity Yamatotakeru rested in Asagaya on his way back from an expedition to the east, and that the villagers who admired his military deeds established a shrine on the site of the old shrine. In the fall of 2009, the shrine underwent a “major renovation of the Heisei era” and became one of the largest Shinto shrines in Tokyo, with a Shinmei-style hall, a Shinto gate, a new prayer hall, and a Noh theater, all built under a recommendation from Ise Jingu.

The deities enshrined at the shrine are Amaterasu Omikami, Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, Susano no Mikoto, and Toyoke no Mikami.

A large torii gate can be seen about a 5-minute walk from JR Asagaya Station.

The grounds of the temple are not so large in comparison, but the white gravel and clean white wood of the temple give it an atmosphere similar to that of the Ise Jingu Shrine, giving it a sense of freedom that is greater than its site area.

The Kaguraden (Noh theater) is also magnificent.

Continue along the approach to the shrine, and on your left you will find Kitano Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning.

The shrine gate is a magnificent structure. There are 16-leaf single chrysanthemums like the Kamimon of Yasukuni-jinja Shrine.

When you pass through the shrine gate, you feel like you have entered a sacred realm.

The worship hall used to be connected to the main hall, but it was reconstructed by removing walls and other structures to accommodate worshippers.

Beyond the hall of worship are three shrines, reminiscent of those at the Ise Jingu Shrine. In the center is Amaterasu Omikami, to the right Tsukiyominomikoto, and to the left Susanomikoto.

Tokyo-daijingu Shrine [Tokyo]

Although the Tokyo-daijingu Shrine is the most famous shrine in Tokyo that is a recommendation of the Ise Jingu Shrine, the Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine has more of an Ise atmosphere.

The grounds of the shrine are clean, quiet and pleasant. It is clear that the shrine is revered by many people as a local guardian deity. It is rare to find a shrine in Tokyo that has the atmosphere of Ise Jingu Shrine. I personally prefer this shrine to the Tokyo Daijingu. If you are in the neighborhood, why not visit the shrine?
