【Hofu Tenmangu Shrine summary】
Hofu Tenmangu Shrine was founded in 904. Together with Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto, it is one of the three major Shinto shrines in Japan. There are about 12,000 shrines enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, widely known as the god of learning, throughout Japan, but Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is the first shrine in Japan to be called the Tenjin-sama, and many people visit to pray for success in school and academic achievement.

While Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto are built on relatively flat land, this shrine is built on a flight of stairs, giving it a sense of grandeur.
The lanterns also have a nice atmosphere, and in February and March, red and white plum trees bloom, adding to the beauty of Tenmangu Shrine. I would recommend the ume (plum) season as it is famous for its ume (Japanese apricot) festival.
After climbing the stairs, you will see the Sakura-mon Gate. The Sakura Gate of Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is also very splendid and beautifully shaped.

The shrine building was destroyed by fire about 70 years ago. The present structure, which was rebuilt, is a magnificent structure.
In addition, Tenmangu Shrine has a statue of a cow called Goshin-gyu. The cow is called “Goshin-ugyu” in Tenmangu Shrine because Michizane Sugawara had a close relationship with cows, which became an object of worship as a messenger of the gods.
【Hofu Tenmangu Shrine Shunpuu-ro】
There is a building called Shunpu-ro in the precincts of the temple. The Mori clan, which ruled this area, attempted to build a five-story pagoda about 200 years ago at the end of the Edo period (1603-1867), but the project was interrupted in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868). Looking under the floor of the building, one can see the architectural structure typical of a five-story pagoda.

Manager’s Comments
We visited this shrine because it was the first Tenmangu Shrine in Japan. There are few visitors to the shrine, perhaps because it is a bit of a walk from the station, but there is free parking and a rest area, so you can visit the shrine comfortably if you have a car. I think it is beautiful in spring when the plum blossoms are in full bloom.
