【Shibuya Hachiko-mae Plaza】

Hachiko-mae Plaza is located at the north exit of Shibuya Station in Tokyo and is a very famous meeting spot. The bronze statue of “Hachiko the Loyal Dog” is located here and attracts many visitors. The statue of Hachiko was installed in 1934 and was melted down once during World War II, but was later rebuilt. Hachiko was a pure Akita dog born in Akita Prefecture in 1923, and is known for the anecdote that he went to Shibuya Station to meet his owner when he returned home, and continued to go there for about 10 years after his owner’s death to await his return. The posthumous remains of Hachiko have been stuffed and are preserved at the National Museum of Nature and Science. Since the spot is well known to people from overseas, there are quite a few foreign tourists visiting Japan. We hope that it will eventually become a cultural asset.

【Shibuya Scramble Crossing】

Shibuya Scramble Crossing is one of the most famous intersections in Tokyo, known as the center of Japanese youth culture and fashion. The intersection is located just in front of the Hachiko exit of JR Shibuya Station. It is said that more than 3,000 people cross the street at a single green light, and approximately 500,000 to 1 million people cross the street each day. This number is the largest in the world.

On holidays, it is filled with foreign tourists taking pictures and videos while crossing in the middle of the crowded intersection. There are many shopping malls, restaurants, and cafes near the Shibuya scramble crossing, and Shibuya 109 is also located nearby. In recent years, Shibuya has undergone redevelopment and the streetscape has changed considerably. I have the impression that there are now many stores that foreigners can also enjoy.
