【Kukai (name of a Buddhist priest)?】

Kukai was a monk of the early Heian period. His posthumous name is Kobo Daishi. He was the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Together with Saicho, the founder of the Tendai sect of Buddhism in Japan, he was at the beginning of the shift in the mainstream of Japanese Buddhism from Nara Buddhism to Heian Buddhism, as it is called today, and brought Shingon esoteric Buddhism from China.

Manager’s Comments

It is not a large shrine like Toshogu, but it is a quiet and peaceful place to visit. Surrounded by deep greenery and beautiful water, it is a wonderful place and was personally my favorite shrine in the Nikko Toshogu area. I think it is a hidden gem. It is only a 3-minute drive from Toshogu Shrine, but it takes about 30 minutes to walk there, so be sure to allow plenty of time.
