【Yuzusame Shrine Summary】
Yuzusame Shrine was founded in 650 (the first year of the Hakuchi era). Since ancient times, it has been revered by local residents as the guardian shrine of Yudagawa Hot Springs. Originally known as Kannon-do, Yuzo Gongen, or Ryuzo Gongen, it is believed to have evolved through periods of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism and separation to its present form. Its status as a Shikinaisha (a shrine listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho, an official register of shrines compiled in the 10th century) confirms its distinguished lineage. It is also known as the filming location for the movie Twilight Samurai.
The enshrined deities are Princess Mizuhime = Princess Tamakushihime, Ōkuninushi = Ōkuninushi, and Sukunabikona = Sukunabikona no Kami.
【Yuzusame Shrine worshipper’s path】

The torii gate is a two-part torii, similar to that at Yudono Shrine, a style commonly seen at shrines influenced by Shinto-Buddhist syncretism. Due to the high humidity, both the approach path and the steps are covered in moss, creating a very atmospheric setting.

The water ablution pavilion is simple, but the placement of the cute mascot characters is delightful.

Since this is a snowy region, we are concerned about damage due to deterioration.

The sacred ginkgo tree, estimated to be over 1,000 years old, is a colossal specimen. It was incredibly large and truly magnificent.

The large branches bear drooping milk-like growths, earning it the name “Milk Ginkgo.” Some visitors come to pray for improved lactation. It is now designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument.

A copper plate engraved with Mayor Yoichi Tomizuka of Tsuruoka City’s inscription titled “Dedicated to the Memory of Shuhei Fujisawa” and a group photo of local residents who appeared as extras. Since the extras are wearing their filming costumes, I thought it was an old photo. It’s slightly faded, and honestly, it’s a bit creepy…

Manager’s Comments
This ancient shrine was truly magnificent. While shrines near hot springs often feel somewhat small in scale, this one had a powerful presence that completely changed my impression as soon as I passed through the torii gate. I learned the film “Twilight Samurai” was nominated for the 76th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and I thought I’d like to watch it if I get the chance. If you ever visit Yudagawa Hot Springs, I highly recommend paying a visit to this shrine.
