Todoroki Fudoson Temple [Tokyo]

【Todoroki Fudoson Temple summary】

Todoroki Fudōson’s official name is Ryūgōsan Myōōin, and it serves as a branch temple of nearby Manganjōji. The exact date of its founding is unknown, but Manganjiji Temple is said to have been established in the late Heian period (794–1185). According to a legend preserved at the temple, the Fudo statue was created 1,300 years ago. It is said that 800 years ago (around 1200 AD?), Kōkyō Daishi searched for a place to enshrine a statue of Fudo Myōō and founded the Fudo Hall on this site, marking the beginning of the temple.

This Fudō Myōō is the 17th temple of the Kanto Thirty-Six Fudō Pilgrimage.

The principal image enshrined here is Fudō Myōō.

【Kanto Thirty-Six Fudo Pilgrimage Sites?】

The Kanto Thirty-Six Fudo Pilgrimage Sites is the collective name for 36 temples dedicated to Fudo Myo-o located within Kanagawa, Tokyo, Saitama, and Chiba Prefectures. Personally, I mainly visit shrines, so I haven’t visited these temples much…

Passing through the mountain gate, proceed along the quiet stone-paved path within the temple grounds, where thick-trunked trees stand tall. You will find an incense burner and eternal lamps, and beyond them lies the main hall.

The grounds leading to the main hall aren’t particularly large, but since I visited during the peak autumn foliage season, I was able to see the splendid scenery of the ginkgo’s yellow contrasting beautifully with the red of the maple leaves.

The main hall was built in the late Edo period and relocated in 1952 (Showa 27), while the mountain gate was moved in 1968 (Showa 43) during the reconstruction of Mangonji Temple.

You can enter Todoroki Valley from beside the shrine office next to the main hall. When you come to Todoroki, the view from here is a must-see.

As you begin descending the stone steps to Todoroki Valley, there’s a spot just ahead where you can turn left and head down. The autumn foliage from this vantage point is also spectacular.

Looking back, there was Benten Island and Benten Pond. It was well-maintained, and many people were taking photos.

Returning to the main path from Benten Hall and descending the stairs, you enter Todoroki Valley.

Beside the Immovable Waterfall stands the Inari Daimyojin shrine. However, due to fallen trees within the valley park and the potential for other trees to fall, the area was closed to entry and passage as of 2025. What a pity.

Todoroki Valley Downstream along the Tanizawa River, across from Todoroki Fudoson Temple, lies a study hall and Japanese garden.

In this bamboo grove, elementary school students seem to dig for bamboo shoots in the spring. Though small in scale, it was well maintained.

The garden built along the slope descending into the valley seemed to make clever use of the natural incline.

Near the summit stands a simple wooden study where you can enjoy complimentary tea.

Manager’s Comments

During the autumn foliage season, I was able to see the stunning scenery of the beautiful contrast between the yellow ginkgo leaves and the red maple leaves. Unfortunately, Todoroki Valley was closed off and I couldn’t walk around, but there are many highlights like the Fudo-son statue, the Japanese garden, and the Shoin hall, so I think you can still enjoy it fully. I’d like to come back once the construction is finished.
