Ienoko Hachiman Shrine [Chiba]

【Ienoko Hachiman Shrine Summary】

Ienoko Hachiman Shrine was founded in 1337 (Enbun 2). Princess Kezo, daughter of Prince Morinaga, son of Emperor Go-Daigo, journeyed to Kamakura mourning her father who had been imprisoned and killed there. On her return, she lost her way and arrived at this place, Ienoko. The princess built a residence here, calling it the “Kamakura Imperial Residence,” and mourned her father’s soul. Later, this place came to be regarded as a representation of Kamakura. A branch spirit of Hondawake no Mikoto, the deity enshrined at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, was invited and enshrined on the mountainside. This marked the beginning of the shrine. One of the retainers who served Princess Kezo at the time, Yoshimori Nakajima, settled in Ienoko and became a shrine priest. It seems his descendants inherited this role, and the Nakajima family has served as the chief priests of the shrine for generations.

The enshrined deity is Prince Hondawake (Emperor Ōjin).

Manager’s Comments

A shrine where a female chief priest is working hard. I believe it’s a rare shrine where you can actually speak with the chief priest listed. Especially for goshuin stamps, they offer many beautiful designs that change monthly, attracting many visitors specifically for the stamps. The chief priest supports local activities and is available between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, but if you’re visiting for goshuin stamps, I recommend checking the website or social media beforehand.
