【Overview of Asahimori Tenmangu】
Asahimori Tenmangu was founded in 1023. Legend says that Ashikaga Ietsuna, who found himself in dire straits due to false accusations, prayed to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. After his innocence was proven, he founded this shrine in deep gratitude for the divine intervention. Originally enshrined in the “Tenjinzawa” area of Mt. Karasawa, it was relocated to its current location in Tenjin-cho, Sano City, in 1602 following an order from the Tokugawa Shogunate to move the castle.
The shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, widely revered as the deity of scholarship and learning.
【Asahimori Tenmangu: The Approach (Sando)】
A beautifully maintained stone-paved path stretches from the torii gate to the Shinmon (shrine gate). Lining both sides of the path are rows of vibrant vermillion lanterns.

The grounds feature about 100 plum trees. During the blooming season from late February to early March, the contrast between the red lanterns and the pink and white plum blossoms creates a breathtaking scene. The shrine shows different faces throughout the seasons: plum blossoms in spring and lush greenery in summer.

The Shinmon gate is built in the prestigious Yakuimon style. While it lacks flashy colors, the rich, understated texture of the wood and the aesthetic curves of the roof exude a calm and dignified atmosphere.

Passing through this gate, you will see the “Nade-ushi” (Rubbing Ox) on your right and the worship hall (Haiden) straight ahead.

It is said that if you rub a part of the bronze ox’s body that corresponds to an ailment on your own body, the illness will be healed. Rubbing the ox’s head is also believed to grant wisdom, fitting for a shrine dedicated to the god of learning.
【Asahimori Tenmangu:Main Shrine Building (Shaden)】
The current buildings were established in 1602 when the shrine was relocated from Karasawa Castle. The architecture follows the Gongen-zukuri style, characterized by the Honden (Main Hall) and Haiden (Worship Hall) being connected by a middle hall called the Heiden.

This heavy, elaborate style flourished during the Edo period and can also be seen at Nikko Toshogu. It is currently designated as a Cultural Property of Sano City.
【Subsidiary Shrine: Mitsumine Shrine】
Walking around the sides and back of the main building, you will find a branch of Mitsumine Shrine, a famous sacred site in Chichibu. Mitsumine is well-known for its divine messengers—the O-inu-sama (wolves).

It enshrines the primordial deities Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto.
【Asahimori Tenmangu:Small Shrines (Hokora)】
Further behind Mitsumine Shrine, you can find several small stone shrines (hokora).

These include Inari, Yasaka, and Asama shrines, which were brought here (a process called Kanjo, or inviting a divine spirit) during the relocation or over the shrine’s long history. They serve as a testament to the deep layers of history at this site.

Admin’s Impressions
In contrast to the lively bustle of Sano Yakuyoke Daishi, this shrine is not “flashy,” but the grounds are incredibly quiet and serene—perfect for those who want to pray and reflect in peace. Although I missed the plum season this time, I definitely want to return between February and March to see the blossoms.
One tip for drivers: If you follow car navigation, it often leads you to the back of the shrine (near the parking lot). To fully enjoy the beautiful lantern-lined approach, I recommend aiming for the main torii gate at the front entrance.
