【Shirakami Sanchi summary】
Shirakami Sanchi is a unique natural heritage site in the world that aims to “protect nature as it is” by recognizing that there is “nothing” but nature in the area where virgin forests spread out. The beech trees and other virgin forests, which have remained untouched for 10,000 years, cover a large area from southwestern Aomori Prefecture to northwestern Akita Prefecture. The reason for the pristine nature is that beech trees have not been cut down because they have been considered useless for purposes other than shiitake mushroom cultivation. It also seems to have been fortunate that people could not settle in this area due to the heavy snowfall.
【Shirakami Sanchi Visitor Center】※Free Admission
It is located near the Nishimeya Village Office at the entrance to the Shirakami Mountains. Admission is free and it is quite spacious.
Here, visitors can learn about the ecosystem of beech trees and beech forests. The display showing giant beech trees and their roots spreading underground was amazing. The “Four Seasons of the Shirakami Mountains” on the giant screen in the video experience hall is a must-see.
It is a good idea to learn about the Shirakami Sanchi here first, and then explore the various trails.
【Shirakami Sanchi Beech forest walking trail】
This is a walking course that allows visitors to easily experience the natural environment and beech forests of the Shirakami Sanchi (Mountainous Region).
There are 15-minute and 1-hour courses, and visitors can observe the Japan Sea-type beech forest and its forest floor plants throughout spring, summer, and fall.
The trail is well maintained, but it requires climbing up and down, so it is best to wear shoes that you are used to. It is recommended to walk in the summer when the leaves are changing color, as there are many insects.

Manager’s Comments
Shirakami Sanchi is a vast area with various walking trails, quiet and clear mountain streams, and forests and waterfalls to be fully appreciated. On the other hand, there is nothing but nature, so it is not recommended for tourists seeking excitement, but for those seeking healing, you should definitely go there. After trekking, you may want to take a hot spring bath.
