【Suehiro Shrine summary】
Suehiro Shrine was founded in 1596 (Keicho 1) or earlier as an Inari shrine, although the date of its foundation is unknown. The shrine seems to have been worshipped as the guardian deity of Yoshiwara (Yoshihara), the first brothel in Edo.
The deities are Uganomitama, Takemikazuchi, and Bishamonten.
【Suehiro Shrine precincts】
The precincts of the temple are compact, but with a perfect balance of komainu (stone guardian dogs), tezumisha (water fountains), and greenery, it is hard to believe that it is located between buildings.
【Suehiro Shrine precincts Yobose Inari】
At the foot of the sacred tree by the approach to the shrine, there is a small inari torii (shrine gate) and the “Foster Mother Sei Inari,”(Yobose Inari) a guardian deity of children and women. It is said that a midwife who actually existed in the Edo period is enshrined here.
【Suehiro Shrine hall of worship】
The Yoshiwara brothel, which burned down in the Meireki Fire, was relocated to Asakusa, and when the shrine building was restored in 1675, a lucky Suehiro fan was found, hence the name Suehiro Shrine. A carved wooden statue of Bishamonten is placed in the center.

Manager’s Comments
It is a very small shrine and not a tourist attraction, but it has a nice atmosphere and sentiment. I thought it was a precious shrine that still retains the atmosphere of Edo period (1603-1867). I happened to visit the shrine on my way back from Suitengu Shrine, and this was the first time I learned about the existence of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. I would like to make a pilgrimage to the Seven Gods of Good Fortune in Tokyo again.
