【Tsugaru-han Neputa Village summary】

Tsugaru-han Neputa village is a tourist facility for the Hirosaki Neputa Festival, located next to Hirosaki Castle. It is not a large facility, but inside you can see exhibits of Hirosaki Neputa. The facility itself is a commercial facility with a Neputa museum and souvenir shops, and costs about 600 yen per adult.

Two large nebuta floats can be seen just outside the entrance. Hirosaki’s floats are fan-shaped and called Neputa. Unlike Aomori’s nebuta, the fan-shaped “fan nebuta” is used as a float. They are quite powerful when seen up close. Typical neputas are displayed inside the museum, and you can enjoy the atmosphere of the festival when the lights are turned on at night.

There are demonstrations of festival taiko and yokobue flute, and those who wish can experience taiko drumming to the accompaniment of the performance. Those who are able to experience taiko drumming will generally be satisfied with the facility. We recommend that you do not be afraid to try it.

【Tsugaru-han Neputa Village  Live Tsugaru shamisen performance】

Every few hours you will hear a live performance of Tsugaru jongara bushi on the Tsugaru shamisen. The jongara bushi was sung by the vassals to comfort the spirits of the fallen lord of the castle in Keicho 2 (1597).” Jongara” is the name of a place called ”Kamigawara.” It is said that the song began when the castle lord’s graveyard was located in Kamigawara and they composed a song of sympathy and lamentation. The power of the shamisen depends on the puller, but seeing the performance up close will be a good memory for you. It is recommended to check the performance time of Tsugaru shamisen before entering the museum.

In addition, visitors can try their hand at playing the Tsugaru shamisen under the guidance of a professional performer in a separate room, though reservations are required.

【Tsugaru-han Neputa Village  hands-on workshop】

The hands-on workshops require 60 to 90 minutes depending on the type of workshop. Therefore, I think you can make the most of your time by looking at the website and making reservations in advance for the ones you would like to participate in. It may be the difference between making it yourself as a souvenir or buying it at a store, but I think it will be a good memory for overseas visitors and small children. We have experienced the dove whistle in the past, but there are also goldfish nepta painting, Tsugaru pottery painting, Tsugaru natural indigo dyeing, and others.

This garden is a registered national monument. I am not familiar with the garden, but it seems to be organized around a pond. Nishikigoi are kept in the pond, and food can be purchased from a gachapon in the garden.

【Koyama Senbei Oura-machi Main Store】

A short distance away from Neputa Village is the Koyama Senbei Oura-machi main store, which is very popular for its rice crackers. You can buy it by mail order, but it may be sold out, and it is recommended to buy it at the store because you can eat it freshly baked. It is different from traditional Nanbu Senbei, but it is a good souvenir. All of them are delicious, but I personally buy pecan nut rice crackers most often.
