Hirosaki Hachimangu Shrine [Aomori]

【Hirosaki Hachimangu Shrine summary】

Hirosaki Hachimangu Shrine was founded in 1612 (Keicho 17), the birthplace of Tadanobu Tsugaru (Oura), who became the first feudal lord of the Hirosaki domain after becoming independent from the Nanbu family and became a war lord. The shrine was relocated by the second lord of the domain, Tsugaru Nobumai, in order to seal off the devil’s gate of the Hirosaki Castle. It seems to be the most visited shrine in Hirosaki City.

The deities are Hondawake no Mikoto, Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto, and Hime no Okami.

The main hall and Karamon gate were built in 1612, and the main hall is decorated in rich colors and the carvings on the toadstools and doors are made in the Momoyama period (1568-1600).

The Karamon is a shikyakumon (four-legged gate) with light warping at the four corners and other parts of the roof. The main shrine is a Sangensha Nagare-zukuri style.

There is also a cherry tree on the right side of the main shrine, which is a very relaxing place. I think it is a well-designed space.

Manager’s Comments

Because of its subtle walking distance from Hirosaki Castle and Hirosaki Station, there were few visitors even during the cherry blossom season. The main shrine, an important cultural property, and the cherry blossoms were wonderful, and I thought it was a shrine that you should definitely stop by. The shrine is currently undergoing repairs and has a new torii (gateway) and worship hall.
