【Miyazaki Jingu Shrine summary】

The Miyazaki Jingu Shrine is not known when it was founded, but it has a very long history. It is said that the shrine was originally built to honor the legacy of Emperor Jinmu when his grandson, Takeiwatatsunomikoto, became the chief Shinto priest of Kyushu. If the text is correct, the date is thought to be around 100 BC. In Miyazaki Prefecture, there are a number of ancient tombs, including a forward-rectangular round burial mound said to be the mausoleum of Ninigi no Mikoto, and within the Miyazaki Jingu Shrine there is also the Funazuka burial mound, the full extent of which is yet to be revealed.

The deity enshrined at the shrine is Kamuyamato-Iwaretobiko no Mikoto, the deity of Emperor Jinmu. Emperor Jinmu’s parents, Unokusa-no-Fuwai no Mikoto and Tamayorihime no Mikoto, are also enshrined together.

The approach to the temple is well maintained and kept clean.

The approach to the shrine is straight from the second torii gate to the third torii gate and to the shrine gate, and I personally thought the atmosphere of the approach was similar to that of Meiji Jingu Shrine.

Although similar in atmosphere, Miyazaki Jingu differs from Meiji Jingu in that the approach to the main shrine is a straight line. The grounds are large and have a solemn and sacred atmosphere from the torii gate to the shrine grounds.

The present shrine pavilion was rebuilt in 1907. The main hall is not vermilion in color and is not flashy, but it is magnificent and dignified like the Shinmei-zukuri of the Ise Jingu Shrine. The main hall and 11 other buildings are registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.

【Miyazaki Gokoku Shrine summary】

Miyazaki Gokoku Shrine was founded in 1955. It is a designated shrine of Miyazaki Prefecture. The shrine enshrines 41,820 souls of those who have served the nation and the public, and 54 souls of those who have died in the line of duty. I learned that Miyazaki Prefecture also had so many war victims (war dead).

Next to the main shrine, there is a war museum, which exhibits the relics of war victims (war dead), photos, and documents of the last fighter plane they were flying.

When you visit Gokoku Shrine, you will feel differently, as you do at Yasukuni Shrine.
