Otonashi Shinsui Park [Tokyo]

【Overview of Otonashi Shinsui Park】

Otonashi Shinsui Park is a municipal park located in Kita City, Tokyo. The Shakujii River, which flows through this area, was known as the Otonashi River during the Edo period and was famous for its “Otonashi Valley” with its steep, dramatic cliffs. In 1720 (Kyoho 5), the eighth Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, ordered cherry trees to be planted along the river, making it and the adjacent Asukayama one of the premier recreational spots in Edo.

Although the valley’s natural form once disappeared during the period of rapid economic growth, it was later restored and is now selected as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Urban Parks.” Located just a short walk from JR Oji Station, its greatest appeal is the ability to enjoy the soothing sound of a mountain stream and seasonal scenery while remaining in the heart of the city.

Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms bloom in full glory, with branches arching over the river surface in a stunning display. It is a true hidden gem for cherry blossom viewing.

While there are only 21 Somei Yoshino trees—which might sound like a small number—they are densely concentrated within a 200-meter valley-like area. This creates a voluminous “tunnel” effect as the blossoms from both banks overlap across the water.

In summer, the park offers lush green shade. Because the water level is kept low, the stream becomes a popular wading area for children to play in.

In the Edo period, people would enjoy “waterfall bathing” here before heading up to pray at Oji Shrine. Even today, there is a staircase connecting the park directly to Oji Shrine. It is a wonderful idea to combine a stroll through the park with a visit to the shrine.

Funakushi Bridge is a beautiful arched bridge that restores the appearance of a wooden bridge once lost in a typhoon. It was rebuilt by miyadaiku (master shrine and temple carpenters) and now serves as the iconic symbol of the park.

Admin’s Impressions

In contrast to the lively and bustling cherry blossom parties at Asukayama Park, this park is perfect for a more refined and serene “adult stroll” where you can appreciate the blossoms while walking. I highly recommend stopping by after your visit to Oji Shrine.
