【Overview of Tennei-ji】
Tennei-ji Temple is said to have originated as “Ko-bo-ji,” a temple founded by the legendary samurai rebel Taira no Masakado during the Tengyo era (approx. 938–946). During the turmoil of Masakado’s rebellion (Tengyo no Ran), the temple was tragically engulfed in flames and completely vanished. It was later restored during the Muromachi period by the Mita clan, the local lords of the area, and renamed “Tennei-ji.” The official mountain name prefixed to the temple, “Ko-bo-zan,” was preserved to honor the memory of the original Ko-bo-ji.
The temple enshrines Shaka Nyorai (Gautama Buddha) as its primary deity.

The Somon is the outermost entrance to the temple. It is built in the Yakuimon style, characterized by its heavy and dignified structure. The current gate dates back to the late Edo period and exudes the “rugged simplicity and fortitude” typical of a Zen temple.

As you walk a bit further into the grounds, the Sammon gate comes into view.

This imposing two-story gate stands at the inner entrance of the precinct. It carries the dignity of a Zen temple that has endured since the Muromachi period. Flanking the gate on the left and right are large, vibrantly colored statues of the Niten (Two Heavenly Guardians).
【Tennei-ji: Chujakumon Gate】
The Chujakumon is located further past the Sammon, directly in front of the Main Hall.

Built in the Muko-karamon style (an arched gable gate), it features the most intricate and delicate decorations among all the gates at Tennei-ji.
【Tennei-ji: Cloisters (Kairo)】

Roofed cloisters extend from both sides of the Chujakumon, encircling the Main Hall. These cloisters serve a practical purpose, allowing monks to move between buildings without getting wet in the rain, while also providing a sharp sense of religious tension and solemnity to the entire precinct. Due to this rare and precious layout, the entire temple grounds are designated as a Tokyo Historical Site.

The current Main Hall is a structure that radiates historical weight, having been rebuilt between 1684 and the Genroku era (late 17th century).

The garden surrounding the Main Hall is designed as a “Zen Garden.” By stripping away excessive decoration and thoughtfully placing gravel and well-manicured trees, the space maintains the atmosphere of a training ground intended to calm the mind and facilitate meditation.

Cast in the 1540s, this bell features an inscription by the restoring lord, the Mita clan, claiming they were descendants of Taira no Masakado. This makes it an incredibly valuable historical document. It is currently designated as a National Important Art Object.

Admin’s Impressions
Over 1,000 years ago, Taira no Masakado stood on this very spot, harboring the grand dream of “building a new nation” and thrusting his plum-branch whip into the earth. When you realize that his obsession and prayers have been preserved in the form of Tennei-ji, this quiet temple transforms from a mere historical site into a “Sacred Ground where Passion Sleeps.”
While Shiofune Kannon is full of “visual spectacle” designed to impress, Tennei-ji offers “stripped-back authenticity.” Flashy tourist spots are fun, but an “unpretentious temple” like Tennei-ji might be the most luxurious place for modern people to truly refresh their souls. Having felt a strange connection to Masakado lately, I was glad to have stumbled upon this place.
