Ono Terusaki Shrine [Tokyo]

【Overview of Ono Terusaki Shrine】

Ono Terusaki Shrine was founded in 852. Following the passing of Lord Ono no Takamura, it was established in the current Kanei-ji Temple area (where he once lived in Ueno Terusaki) to honor his legacy. During the Edo period, due to the construction of Kanei-ji, the shrine was relocated to its present site in Iriya.

The principal deity enshrined here is Ono no Takamura, and Sugawara no Michizane—also revered as a god of learning—is co-enshrined in the same hall. The shrine is said to grant blessings for academic success, performing arts, and work/career advancement.

【Who is Ono no Takamura?】

Ono no Takamura was a highly capable senior bureaucrat and poet with diverse talents during the early Heian period (9th century). In addition to his active role in establishing laws and composing Chinese poetry at the Imperial Court, he is famously known for refusing to board a ship as an envoy to Tang China. Fascinatingly, legend has it that by night, he used a well at Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple in Kyoto to descend into Hell and work as an assistant to Enma (the King of Hell). He is also said to be the grandfather of the legendary beauty and poet, Ono no Komachi.

Admin’s Impressions

This shrine possesses the calm and dignified atmosphere unique to ancient shrines. Being an urban shrine, the grounds are relatively compact, yet it features a Fuji-zuka and enshrines a total of 15 deities when including the sub-shrines. I visited in the morning to pray and receive a goshuin (shrine seal), and seeing a continuous stream of worshippers made me realize just how popular it is.
