1. Shakujii Hikawa Shrine: The “Energy of the Forest” Condensed into a Intimate Precinct

【The Beginning of the Journey: A Guardian Forest to Purify the Mind】

Our first stop was the grand guardian shrine of the entire Shakujii area. While the precinct itself is relatively compact, you can feel the air instantly shift the moment you step inside. The sacred guardian forest, spanning over 6,600 square meters (2,000 tsubo), is a true urban oasis.

Just walking along the approach as the sun dapples through the trees completely clears your mind, making it the absolute perfect, refreshing starting point for our journey.

2. Shakujii Park (Sanpoji Pond): A Mystical Waterside Where Legends Dissolve

Leaving the shrine’s forest behind, we headed toward Sanpoji Pond. This is a place where deep silence rules, standing in stark contrast to the lively energy of the boating pond nearby.

It is a wonderful moment to walk along the wooden boardwalks while letting your mind wander back to the legends of the former castle lord and Princess Teru. Exploring Itsukushima Shrine standing by the water, and the Ana-Benten shrine (Uga Shrine) nestled quietly inside a cave, wraps you in a mysterious sensation where reality and history beautifully dissolve into one another.

A Relaxing Break at a Food Truck

Taking a coffee break at a food truck we spotted earlier behind Shakujii Hikawa Shrine.

Because it wasn’t a flashy café but a simple food truck that blended seamlessly into nature, it harmonized perfectly with the surroundings without disrupting the deep quiet of the space. This little detour made the entire walk feel even more luxurious.

3. Sanpoji Temple: Stepping Through a Stately Gate on a Time-Travel Journey

【The Sanctuary of Prayer: A Puzzle of Layered History】

Adjacent to Shakujii Park, Sanpoji is a temple filled with a level of silence and prestige that completely makes you forget the chaos of the city. Stepping into the precinct, you are greeted by gates adorned with intricate carvings, a magnificent Tahoto pagoda, and the Eleven-Headed Great Kannon statue with her gentle expression—its stately presence is utterly overwhelming.

Visiting this temple in tandem with a stroll through Shakujii Park offers a peaceful moment where your soul feels washed clean by the weight of history and the serene atmosphere.

4. Dojoji Temple

To bring our walk to a close, we headed to Dojoji Temple, where the spirit of Zen hangs gently in the air.

Among all the places we explored today, this was the most lush with greenery and surprisingly the quietest. The contrast between the dignified three-story pagoda and the bamboo grove is strikingly beautiful; simply standing there causes the mind to become perfectly still and calm. Folding our hands in prayer before the memorial towers of the Toshima clan, we slowly savored the lingering echoes of history. This quiet finale was undoubtedly the highlight of the entire journey.

The Nerima City Shakujii Park Furusato Culture Museum is a museum adjacent to metropolitan Shakujii Park, where visitors can experience and learn about the history, nature, and traditional culture of Nerima Ward. Opened in March 2010, its permanent exhibition is open to the public free of charge.

Furthermore, located on the premises of this facility is the Former Uchida House Residence. Registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Nerima Ward, it stands as one of the few surviving examples of traditional thatched-roof architecture within Nerima.

An eatery where you can enjoy authentic local Musashino Udon noodles is attached to the rest area on the first floor of the museum. If the food trucks happen not to be open during your visit, taking a relaxing break here is an excellent alternative.

Admin’s Recommended Points

There are absolutely no flashy attractions here. Yet, the moss on the stone lanterns that has accumulated over centuries, the sound of the bamboo grove swaying in the wind, and the rich scent of the forest—here, you can find a “genuine slice of time” to be savored with all five senses. For mature travelers who want to slowly enjoy the lingering echoes of history and the crisp freshness of nature at their own pace, this is a truly special route that I highly recommend walking.
